PrEP

A new paper published in JAIDS finds that pharmacists could play a key role in providing long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. In a mixed methods analysis of survey and interview data, CHPRC researchers found that many pharmacists would be willing to administer injectable PrEP if provided with training, compensation, and a private room. However, pharmacists may require additional resources and policy support to make widespread implementation feasible.

Policy brief based on a study of seven California emergency departments (ED) implementing HIV Prevention Services (HPS) linkage programs. Three models for integrating HPS into the ED were identified and may serve as a guide for future protocol development.

In February 2024, Senate Bill 339 was signed into law to help realize the goal of widespread access to HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP) in California pharmacies. This fact sheet explains key changes under Senate Bill 339 that may reduce previously-identified barriers to pharmacist delivery of PrEP/PEP.
