Pharmacy-Based HIV Prevention in California: Results of a Statewide Mystery Client Survey

California is the first state to pass legislation authorizing pharmacists to independently prescribe up to 60 days of oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication. Five years after implementation began under Senate Bill 159 and 1 year after SB339, we evaluated the implementation of pharmacy-initiated PrEP services in California by having trained research assistants act as mystery “clients” call community pharmacies to assess the availability of oral and long-acting injectable (LAI) PrEP services.
