“It’s not discrete, it’s not going to be easy”: Reconstructing syndemic theory as syndemic practice

January 28, 2025

Syndemic theory provides a framework for analyzing the relationship between social conditions and the co-occurrence of two or more disease states. In this brief report, we highlight major themes that emerged from qualitative interviews exploring how syndemic theory is being put into practice in HIV-related policy. Participants described how syndemic theory highlights a person-centered approach to healthcare and underscores a need for integrated service delivery, but pointed to considerable challenges with putting this theory into practice and trying to work across silos.
